Our friend and colleague in the Almighty’s work, Reuven Prager, passed away today. In his memory, we offer this teaching he gave from our Hanukkah 2021 online event.
Known as the “Levite on Duty,” Reuven Prager finished his course and entered his rest today in Israel. Reuven’s mission was to educate people on the ancient practices of the Hebrew people. For more than three decades, he dedicated his life’s work to restore the reality of ancient Israelite customs in modern Israel — real, living customs that had been reduced to figurative remembrances while the Hebrew people were in exile for 2,000 years. He was first known for his work with “beged ivri,” meaning Hebrew garments. Through the tailoring of these garments, Reuven helped thousands around the world peer into the past and restore the modern Israeli’s sense of ownership of the Land of Israel. Since 1992, he also helped to restore the ancient Hebrew marriage ceremony for countless couples in Israel. Perhaps his most notable achievement was restoring and minting a pure silver holy half shekel, new every year, since 1998 — the first time Israel had a holy half shekel in 1,927 years. Each year, the coin would feature a different image of a vessel of ancient Israelite custom that someone else in Israel had restored: the 22-string Davidic harp, bridal crown, silver firepan, the Hatavat menorah, the tribal flag of Levi, and many more. Reuven will be missed by the Rood Crew and especially by his good friend, Michael Rood. Well done, Reuven — we’ll see you when the smoke clears.
